Scott County Business Enterprise

Plateau Electric Cooperative provides electricity services throughout Scott County. In addition to basic electrical service, Plateau Electric also provides security lights, heat pump loans and other services.

Highland Telephone Cooperative provides telephone and long-distance services throughout the county, while its wholly-owned subsidiary, Highland Communications provides broadband Internet access. In the fall of 2010, Highland began a $66 million project that will extend fiber optics to every residence and business in Scott County.

Natural gas is provided by Citizens Gas Utility District. Citizens Gas maintains storage fields within the district to help keep the cost of natural gas competitive.

Water is provided in the Oneida area by the Oneida Water & Wastewater Department. In the rest of the county, it is provided by Huntsville Utility District. Oneida’s water is provided by the Howard H. Baker Sr. Watershed Lake just west of town, a 50-acre impoundment that is backed up by Oneida City Park Lake. Huntsville’s water is provided by the 200-acre Flat Creek Reservoir.

The industrial heart of Scott County is located just 20 miles from Interstate 75. U.S. Hwy. 27 and State Hwy. 63 are recognized as among the best highways in the state. The Scott County Airport provides general aviation service to the business community.

Railroads: Norfolk-Southern‘s north-south railroad line connects Scott County to Knoxville, Chattanooga, Cincinnati and other major cities along the route. Ranger Energy Services owns a 42-mile short line from Oneida into the Cumberland Mountains of eastern Scott County, where the production of timber and coal is going strong.

Highways: The county seat of Huntsville is located 20 miles from Interstate 75 via State Hwy. 63. Interstate 75 provides easy connection to Knoxville and Lexington.

Navigable Waterways: The nearest port is located in Clinton, Tenn., approximately 45 miles from Huntsville and just off I-75.

General Air Service: Scott County Airport features a 5,500 ft. runway with asphalt surface and rotating 36 in. beacon lighting. 100LL and Jet A octane are available.

Commercial Air Service: McGhee-Tyson Airport is 80 miles from Oneida, featuring a 9,900 ft. runway with concrete surface and high and medium density lighting. 80/100 octane is available.

SALES & USE TAX
No sale tax on:

• Purchases of material handling and racking equipment associated with the required capital investment of $10 million by a distribution or warehouse facility.
• Raw material for processing
• Reduced sales tax rates for manufacturer’s use of energy fuel and water. Tax-exempt is used directly in manufacturing process.
• Headquarters Tax Credit. Reduction of sales tax from 7 percent to 0.5 percent on building materials,  slaappillen melatonine, machinery and equipment used in the construction of remodeling of a qualified headquarters facility.

Education & Training

With close ties between schools and local businesses and curricula designed to prepare students and workers for 21st Century technologies, education and training are top priorities in Scott County.

Public Schools

Both the Scott County School System and the Oneida Special School District have been recognized at the state and national levels for innovative technologies and approaches to education.

Over 99% of the courses at public primary and secondary schools in Scott County are taught by highly-qualified teachers, and every school is in good standing with the Annual Yearly Progress requirements of the federal No Child Left Behind Act.

Scott High School has been recognized for its green initiatives, which include using solar and wind power on campus and using student-produced biodiesel fuel to power school maintenance equipment. The school has also recognized for its implementation of distance-learning technologies that connect Scott County’s middle school students with highly-qualified instructors at Scott High School and high school students with college professors and other long-distance educational resources.

Scott High is also home to a student-built, student-operated museum of local cultural heritage that is believed to be the first of its kind in the U.S. The Museum of Scott County encompasses several buildings and more than one acre of land on Scott High’s campus and is host to the Scott County Heritage Festival each September.

Oneida High School has been the subject of articles in national scholarly periodicals for its forward-thinking education initiatives and is recognized as one of the best public schools in Tennessee.

In 2009, Burchfield School won the national Distinguished School Award.

Higher Education

There are 14 universities within a 50-mile radius of Scott County offering a wide range of associate, undergraduate and graduate degree programs, including the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and Tennessee Technological University. Ten area community colleges offer a wide variety of associate degree programs.

In Scott County, Roane State Community College’s Huntsville campus offers associate degree programs and has articulation agreements with UT and TTU for students wishing to continue their pursuit of a graduate or post-graduate degree after attending Roane State. Tennessee Tech also offers a variety of graduate degree programs through RSCC’s Huntsville campus, enabling students to obtain bachelor’s degrees in amazon product listing optimization and for working adults to continue their education without leaving the community. In 2011, Roane State ranked No. 27 among more than 500 community colleges nationwide.

Trade Schools

The Tennessee Technology Center has a campus in Huntsville and Oneida and offers workforce development through a variety of programs to prepare individuals for employment or advancement within their respective fields. The Technology Center offers high-quality training through traditional and distance-learning methods.

When a local manufacturing firm announced a large-scale layoff in January 2010, the Tennessee Technology Center and Roane State Community College joined forces with the Scott County Mayor’s Office and the Department of Workforce Development to provide retraining opportunities for all employees impacted by the layoff.

Scott unemployment drops to 8-year low

Scott County’s unemployment rate dropped 1.5 percentage points in April, to 8.9%, according to the Tennessee Department of Labor & Workforce Development.

That is the lowest unemployment rate for Scott County since December 2007. That month, at the onset of the economic recession, Scott County’s unemployment rate stood at 8.4%. It jumped to 9.8% in January 2008 and eventually peaked at over 23% in early 2011.

There was other good news in the data, as well. Scott County added another 160 jobs between March and April, with the Danish manufacturer sovepiller håndkøb  helping with the total number of employed Scott.

Countians jumped from 7,220 to 7,380 — the most since September 2013.

The estimated local work force in April was 8,110, up from 8,050 in March.

Unemployment, meanwhile, dipped to 720, its lowest since November 2007, when just 650 Scott Countians were listed as unemployed.

Scott selected for property evaluation

HUNTSVILLE — Scott County is one of eight counties across the state selected by the Tennessee Department of Economic & Community Development to participate in the Select Tennessee Property Evaluation Program spring round, the Industrial Development Board of Scott County announced Monday afternoon.

Launched in 2015, the purpose of PEP is to improve the inventory of industrial sites and buildings in Tennessee by evaluating potential properties,  amazon product listing optimization, advising counties on where investment may be most beneficial and what is needed to address issues.

TNECD unveiled the eight counties that it selected to participate in the program Monday afternoon.
